rain in pakistan The death toll in rain-related incidents in Pakistan, which is grappling with cash crunch due to incessant rains and unprecedented floods since June, has risen to 76, while 133 people have been injured during the same period.

A report by the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) said that at least nine people died and eight others were injured due to heavy rains across Pakistan in the last 24 hours, reports ARY News.

The 76 deaths since June include 15 women and 31 children, as well as 78 homes damaged as extreme floods continue to wreak havoc in the country. Maximum 48 people died in Pakistan’s Punjab province, while 20 people died in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province.

Several rain-related deaths in Pakistan have reportedly been due to electrocution and building collapse. Citizens of Pakistan are facing immense inconvenience as traffic movement has been disrupted and power supply has been cut due to widespread water-logging on roads and side by-lanes.

Earlier this week, the Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) claimed that rainfall in Punjab has broken a 30-year record, with 12 of its monitoring points recording more than 200 mm of rainfall in two spells.

At least 27 people, including eight children, died in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa last month due to heavy rains and strong winds.

Pakistan is one of the most sensitive countries to extreme rainfall. Although monsoon rains are important for farmers’ livelihood and food security, they cause massive landslides and floods in the country.

Last year, monsoon rains across Pakistan killed over 1,700 people and damaged two million houses.
