Pak PM Imran Khan’s hateful remarks target Afghan women

Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan has been trolled globally for his misogynistic remarks targeting Afghan women at the recently concluded conference of members of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).

The Al Arabiya Post reported that observers of Western governments who attended the meeting could not miss Imran Khan’s remark that “not educating girls is part of Afghan culture”.

Media outlets also reported that Pakistan’s prime minister has been trolled at home and abroad, especially by Afghans, for whom he claims to speak. It is likely that some foreign ministers from Islamic nations who represent more enlightened and developed societies would have found his remarks unacceptable.

In particular, Pakistan wanted the world community to rescue Afghans from the misery and “humanitarian devastation” that has intensified since the Taliban returned to power.

According to Human Rights Watch, 2021 has been the worst year for Afghan women as the Taliban withdrew access to their rights after taking control of Afghanistan.

As Tolo News reports, Human Rights Watch dubbed 2021 an unfortunate year for women “mostly because of Afghanistan”. Heather Barr, associate director of the women’s rights division at Human Rights Watch, said on Tuesday that the “Taliban” took back Afghan women’s access to their rights.

In a move that could further tarnish the Taliban’s image internationally, the group banned the use of photographs of women in front of stores in the city of Kabul.

Kabul municipal spokesman Nematullah Barakzai said the government had ordered municipal officials to remove all photographs of women on signboards in shops and business centers in Kabul, Tolo News reported.

“Based on the government’s decision, pictures that are against Islamic rules will be collected or removed from the hoardings,” Barakzai said.

The Islamic emirate is facing criticism inside and outside Afghanistan for its ban on women.
