How common are ovarian cysts in women?

An ovarian cyst is a common diagnosis found after an ultrasound that women of reproductive age undergo. Therefore, when we examine scans of women receiving fertility treatments or having ovulation induction as part of infertility treatment, we may find cystic enlargement as a common finding.

Ovarian cysts can be functional or pathological. We must consider the clinical perspective, such as the presenting symptoms of the patient and the age group to which he belongs. In addition, ultrasound characteristics such as size of the cyst, ECHO characteristics, solid components of one or both sides, etc. are very important and should be observed.

How can you treat or manage it?

For the treatment of ovarian cysts, there is no diet that can be suggested. Wait and see, and a repeat scan after three months, can be used to treat functional cysts that are present as a result of hormone fluctuations. However, if you have an enlargement with ECHO features, such as dermoid and endometriotic cystic, the course of treatment will depend on the size, bilaterality, and the patient’s symptoms.

Sometimes all we can do is wait and see how the cyst develops, if it is bigger than 5 to 6 cm then only surgery can be done otherwise small cyst may heal on its own. Pathological cysts usually require surgical management.
