Over 30 killed as landslides, floods ravage South Korea amid heavy downpour

Massive landslides and floods following heavy rains in South Korea have so far killed more than 30 people, while 10 others are missing, according to the government on Saturday.

Seven people have died and 13 have been injured in landslide-related incidents since Thursday, according to the South Korean Ministry of the Interior and Security, reports the AP. The ministry’s official death toll stood at 26 on Sunday morning.

About 6,000 people had to be evacuated as the country has been experiencing heavy rains since 9 July and 27,260 homes are without electricity. As of Saturday, more than 4,200 people were stationed in temporary shelters.

Six bodies were recovered from 15 vehicles stuck in a flooded tunnel in Cheongju city. Nine survivors were rescued by approximately 400 rescue workers.

Meanwhile, at least 20 flights were canceled and train services were suspended. Around 200 roads were closed for vehicular movement, the government said.

South Korea’s weather agency said that heavy rains will continue in many parts of the country till Sunday. In the central regions, Gonju and Cheongyang recorded the highest rainfall with more than 600 mm.
