An inquiry has been ordered into the role of policemen in the honor killing of a 20-year-old woman who ran away from her lover and married her.
The woman was stabbed in the chest just outside the police station and her brothers slit her throat. The arrested brothers told the police that she had brought slander to the family.
Badaun SSP Sankalp Sharma said, “We are probing the role of the investigating officer and other policemen in the police station. Who leaked the information to the girl’s family that the couple is coming to the police station, this is very important?”
Archana Yugal, a BA student, belonged to a prominent farmer family of Palia Gujar village in Badaun.
Archana’s father’s cousin Devendra Kumar, who lives in the same village, often called her family. They fell in love but the relationship was taboo.
Archana and Devendra eloped on June 22 and got married at a temple in Bareilly.
On June 30, his elder brother Ravit Kumar lodged a complaint with the Dataganj police station accusing Devendra and three members of his family of kidnapping.
Archana and Devendra sought protection from the Allahabad High Court and their plea was accepted.
SSP Sankalp Sharma said, “We did not get the High Court order, but the couple informed the local police. They said they wanted police protection. So they were asked to come to the police station.”
On the intervening night of Wednesday and Thursday, the couple went to the Dataganj police station to avoid the eyes of their relatives.
But her brother, father and her twin brother lay in wait and before the couple could understand anything, her brothers, Ravit and Pushpendra, stabbed her in the chest and slit her throat. The police saved Devendra.
“We have ensured the security of Devendra and Ravit and Pushpendra have been arrested from the spot along with the murder weapon,” the SSP said.
