Ops On To Find 3 Fishermen Missing After Boat Capsize | Thiruvananthapuram News – Times of India

Thiruvananthapuram: The rescue operations to find the three missing persons of a fishing boat, with 24 people on board and that capsized off Perumathura-Muthalapozhi coast on Monday, continued on Wednesday. The hours-long effort to bring a huge crane to the spot was not successful on Wednesday.
By clearing the route to the spot through the groyne (‘pulimuttu’), the rescue team plans to lift the boat and the fishing net weighing three tonne using the crane. By cutting the trees, removing tetrapods on the groyne and filling sand in gaps the rescue team cleared half way through the groyne. “Without much delay, we will be able to take the crane to the spot, and using the crane we can lift the boat and net. The crane that we plan to take to the spot is the largest available one in the district and it has a capacity of 150 tonne,” said sub-collector Madhavikutty MS.
The fishermen, who were rescued, informed that the boat capsized after hitting a rock in the groyne during a strong wave.
The fishing net which was on the boat got sprawled off, covering the boat and the three fishermen, who are missing. Cutting the net was considered the only solution to recover the boat and the missing fishermen, they said.
Subsequently, the Indian Navy team tried to break the net in a number of ways, but was not successful.
Following the accident, two people died and three went missing. Muhammed Osman (19) and Muhammed Musthafa (16), sons of Kahar who owns the boat that met with the accident, and Abdul Samad (50), a native of Ramanthali, are missing.
The rescue operation was jointly conducted by marine enforcement, coastal police and coast guard.
