Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Thursday hit out at opposition parties for boycotting the inauguration of the new Parliament building, saying they were making a “disgusting” attempt to create controversy.

His remarks came a day after 20 opposition parties, including the Congress, TMC, Samajwadi Party and AAP, announced a boycott of the May 28 inauguration of the building by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

He said the Prime Minister’s decision to inaugurate it himself, completely bypassing President Draupadi Murmu, is not only a gross insult, but also a direct attack on our democracy, which demands a befitting response. The Chief Minister said that this is not the first time. That a Prime Minister is becoming a “Sakshi” (witness) for an inauguration in the Parliament complex. Adityanath said that earlier, Prime Minister Indira Gandhi had inaugurated the Parliament Annexe and Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi had laid the foundation stone of the Parliament Library.

On announcing the boycott, he said, “In the history of independent India, the date of May 28 is going to be recorded as a glorious day when the Prime Minister will present the new Parliament House to the nation.” watershed moment. Instead of making this moment dignified and glorious, the kind of statements coming from Congress and other opposition parties are sad and irresponsible. This is going to undermine democracy,” the chief minister said in the video, which he shared on his official Twitter handle. He said, people in the country and the world are proud of “India being the largest democracy”, and Prime Minister Modi has given a new identity to the country. On the opposition’s stand, Adityanath said “disgusting attempts are being made” to create a controversy over the glorious moment. I think the country will not accept such things. The new Parliament House has been built keeping in mind a visionary approach…the need of today and the vision for the next 100 years.”
