Ons Jabur wins German Open title after injured Belinda Bencic retires

Tunisia’s Ons Jabeur won the German Open and his third career title on Sunday after Switzerland’s Belinda Bencic had to retire from a championship match injury.

8 seed Bencic suffered an ankle injury in the final game of the opening set, and although the Swiss continued to play three more games, he ended the match, trailing 6-3, 2-1.

Although the circumstances were unfortunate, No. 1 seed Jabeur has now become the only player other than World 1 Inga Swietec and this week’s Birmingham champion Beatriz Haddad Maia have won multiple titles this season. Jabeur won the WTA 1000 title on clay in Madrid last month.

Jabeur and Bencic had played three times before, all on clay, with Bencic leading 2-1 head-to-head on Sunday. The pair had already met twice this year: Bencic defeated Jabeur in the Charleston final, and Jabeur took revenge on his way to the Madrid title.

The 27-year-old Jabeur now has two grass-court titles to her name after becoming the first Arab woman to claim a singles title after winning the lawns of Birmingham last season.

The Tunisian player has been even more impressive this year as she has reached the finals in four of her last six events. Currently ranked at a career-best world No 4, Jaboor is now forecast to reach a new career-high ranking of World No 3 on Monday.

Behind a fierce forehand, Jabeur took a 3–0 lead early in the match, but Bencic came back on serve to pull it off 4–3. However, Jabeur played a surprise game to break again, firing clever lobs and grazing on the sidelines to take a consistent 5-3 lead.

Bencic had four break points to return to serve in the next game, but Jabur defended each of them. On the fourth due of that game, Bencic sprained his ankle while returning serve, and took an immediate medical time-out.

After Jabeur completed the first set, Bencic fought the first three games of the second set, but after breaking 2–1, last year’s Olympic gold medalist had to stop play.
