Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma is of the opinion that the majority of Hindu members in the Assam Congress will leave the party soon
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday claimed that only 5-7 minority MLAs will remain in the state Congress unit by the year 2026. Sarma was in Nagaon to launch developmental projects worth Rs 200 crore.
“I have told this earlier also, more MLAs to join either in BJP or AGP soon. Today I can say by the year 2026, ie after the next Assembly Elections only 5 to 7 minority MLAs to represent Congress in the Assam assembly.” Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma states this in Nagaon.
Earlier in the day, CM Sarma launched infrastructure projects worth over Rs 200 crore in Nagaon, including a solar power plant and water supply initiatives under the Jal Jeevan Mission.
“By 2026 Assam Congress will be represented by MLAs like Rakibul Hussain, Nurul Hooda, Jakir Hussain Sikdar and AK Rashid Alam,” the Assam CM said while talking to reporters.
Sarma is of the opinion that the majority of Hindu members in the Assam Congress will leave the party soon. He is also hopeful that the Leader of the Opposition (LoP) and son of former Assam CM Late Hiteswar Saikia (who was one of the political Gurus of Sarma) Debabrat Saikia will join the BJP soon.
Recently, rumours were rife about Debabrat Saikia joining the saffron party but it was reportedly postponed as ‘his mother asked him not to leave Congress’.
In this context, CM Sarma said, “Debarat Saikia may join BJP whenever he wishes, I’ll talk to his mother, I have a very good relationship with her.” He also stated that the four Congress MLAs who had extended their support to BJP-led government need not fear. They will neither lose their MLA post nor will they be deprived of any facilities as a legislator.
Meanwhile, another Working President of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC), Rana Goswami resigned from his role as the organisational in-charge of Upper Assam.
Goswami’s resignation comes a few days after former Working President Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha extended support to the BJP-led government.
Rana Goswami held a meeting with his followers at his Jorhat residence on Saturday night. The very next day, he resigned from his role as the in-charge of Upper Assam due to “various political reasons”.
