Could this be the last OnePlus Pro we get in the market?

OnePlus launched a new flagship phone in India this week and also debuted other new product categories

OnePlus 11 has been launched globally after debuting in China last month. The company has talked about its flagship-like qualities but the affordable nature of the brand has once again factored into its strategy. This has got everyone talking about the existence of the Pro brand and how OnePlus can differentiate it from the vanilla model.

Turns out that OnePlus has decided to ditch the Pro version entirely, instead focusing on making a quality flagship every year. The company has been quoted as saying that we will not see the OnePlus 11 Pro variant in 2023.

Not just that, OnePlus is now keen on streamlining its portfolio, which means the semi-annual T edition will also be gone. “Starting with our 2023 lineup, we are streamlining the flagship portfolio in North America (and globally) by eliminating our Pro lineup. In our opinion, you don’t need a ‘Pro’ name for a device that’s already a ‘Pro’. Android Authorization reports,

So does this mean that the OnePlus 11 will be the only flagship device from the company this year? While OnePlus didn’t confirm or deny, it is possible that the company is looking at the foldable as its next main agenda later this year. OnePlus has already teased its foldable phone coming in the third quarter of 2023 at the global OnePlus 11 launch this week.

Its strategy to cut down on phone models could also be part of a wider ambition to become an ecosystem. OnePlus has TVs, smartwatches, and phones on the market, now it’s adding tablets and Wi-Fi routers, too. It would not be possible to have so many products in its catalog and then have three flagship phones in a year.

This is where we think the R variant comes into play, targeting markets like India where a Rs 40,000 OnePlus phone can pack solid features, compared to a Rs 60,000 smartphone.

Having said that, OnePlus claims that the OnePlus 11 as all Pro features don’t make sense to us, especially since the phone comes without any IP68 rating, doesn’t support wireless charging and the cameras aren’t really flagship-class. There are no grades. We’d love to see the company go back to its old form, but how all of these categories play out is something we look forward to seeing in the years to come.
