A suspected Improvised Explosive Device (IED) was triggered by unidentified miscreants at a community hall in Manipur’s Thoubal district in the early hours of Monday, killing a West Bengal laborer and injuring four others, police said.

He told that all the laborers of West Bengal were sleeping when the blast took place in Khongjom area.

According to the police, the IED blast took place at around 1.14 a.m. in the community hall where some non-Manipuris engaged in water tank construction companies Koya and GCKC were staying.

Pankaj Mahto (21) of Khariatabad died at Thoubal District Hospital. A police officer said that the four were engaged in making water tanks in the community hall.

The injured, who are undergoing treatment at the hospital, have been identified as Arup Mandal (30), Souvik Patra (18), Apoorva Mandal (25) and Rajesh Ramanik (19). Police sources said the injured were taken to Thoubal district hospital and later referred to JNIMS in Imphal.

Further investigation is on, the police said.
