Elephants receive special food at Delhi Zoo on the occasion of World Elephant Day 2021.
World Elephant Day was established on 12 August 2012 as a result of a collaboration between the Thailand-based Elephant Breeding Foundation and Canadian filmmaker Patricia Sims. Since then, World Elephant Day is celebrated every year on 12 August. The day aims to raise awareness about the issues that threaten elephants. According to its website, World Elephant Day is “the means by which organizations and individuals can rally together to give voice to the problems that threaten elephants.” Shrinking habitat and illegal poaching for the elephant ivory trade are two of the most serious issues facing elephant populations today. World Elephant Day is one way to raise awareness and mobilize support for these issues – and it does so through partnerships with elephant conservation organizations. The World Elephant Society also urges individuals and organizations to mark the day with their own events around the world.
On the occasion of World Elephant Day, Delhi Zoo had put up a special feast for its gentle giants. The National Zoological Park in Delhi is home to two Asian elephants, Lakshmi and Hira. On World Elephant Day, they received fruits of watermelon, apple, coconut and more, a photo shared by the zoo shows.
Sharing the picture on Twitter, Delhi Zoo wrote, “Elephants in NZP were offered a special meal on the occasion of World Elephant Day today.”

Meanwhile, elephants also got a special treat today at Wildlife SOS Sanctuary in Mathura, Uttar Pradesh. According to news agency Reuters, elephants rescued from circuses and temples were given a feast of their favorite fruits and vegetables to celebrate World Elephant Day.
In Karnataka, Bannerghatta Zoo announced a new program. The zoo announced on Twitter, “On World Elephant Day, BBP is launching a new program to engage citizens to provide their services such as forage harvesting through donation services at the zoo. Harvested fodder elephants will be fed.”
