On this day in 2019: India win 1st day-night Test at home vs Bangladesh

On this day, two years ago in 2019, Virat Kohli-led Team India played their first day-night Test match against Bangladesh at the prestigious Eden Gardens Stadium in Kolkata. Kohli and co. Won that match by an innings and 46 runs in just three days. Bangladesh’s Test captain Mominul Haque won the toss and elected to bat in the memorable match.

However, his plan to bat first failed as Indian fast bowlers, especially Ishant Sharma, wreaked havoc on Bangladesh’s batting order with his lethal bowling. Ishant took five wickets for just 22 runs in the first innings of the match as India bundled out Bangladesh for 106 in 30.3 overs.

Apart from Ishant, Umesh Yadav and Mohammed Shami also acted with the ball as they took three and two wickets respectively. Bangladesh opener Shadman Islam scored the most runs in the first innings for the visiting team. He scored 29 runs in 52 balls with the help of five fours.

In reply, Indian skipper Virat Kohli smashed 136 runs off 194 balls as the hosts declared their innings at a respectable total of 347 for the loss of nine wickets. It was Kohli’s 27th century in the longest format of the game. Interestingly, Kohli hasn’t scored a single century since his monstrous innings in that game.

Apart from Kohli, India’s Test specialist Cheteshwar Pujara (55 off 105 balls) and vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane (51 off 69 balls) also contributed with the bat.

For Bangladesh, Abadot Hossain and Al-Amin Hossain took three wickets each, while Abu Zayed and Taijul Islam took two and one wicket respectively.

Bangladesh batsmen failed to take the lead on this occasion in their second innings as well as they lost four wickets within 13 runs. However, after that, Mushfiqur Rahim (74) and Mahmudullah (39 off 41 balls) tried to stabilize the tourists’ innings with a 69-run stand for the fifth wicket before the latter retired hurt.

Eventually, India registered a massive victory by bowling out Bangladesh for just 195 runs. Umesh performed brilliantly with the ball for India in the second innings, taking five wickets for 53 runs. Ishant also took four wickets in the third innings of the match.
