On this day in 1999: England’s Peter Ease receives a standing ovation

Batsmen receiving a standing ovation from their team after a stellar performance with the willow is not a new scenario in the gentlemen’s game. However, fans might be left shocked to hear that English spinner Peter Such received a standing ovation for scoring a duck off 51 balls.

The iconic incident occurred during the third Test of the four-match series between England and New Zealand at Old Trafford in Manchester in 1999. Coming to bat first, England had a bad day. The batsmen failed to show any character or flair as they lost their wickets cheaply to New Zealand’s decorated bowling unit.

The Test match was heavily affected by rain and only 61 overs were possible on the first day. England team managed to score 108 runs in 61 overs for the loss of five wickets. Five of the top seven English batsmen faced 30+ balls and looked to be settled in the middle. However, barring Mark Ramprakash, none of the players could convert their good start into a good innings.

Starting the second day at 108/5, the hosts found themselves in trouble with a score of 152/8 before the lunch break. England had no hope from number ten batsman Peter, as he prepared himself for a low first innings lead.

However, Peter showed his valor and resilience with the willow to stand at the crease to support Ramprakash for 72 minutes. Peter could not open his account while he was at the crease for 72 minutes as he defended himself to save his wicket. The off-spinner’s remarkable innings ended on his 51st ball as Daniel Vettori managed to tarp him at short leg.

Although Peter contributed nothing to the scoreboard, he was extremely influential. When he was returning back to the pavilion, the right-handed batsman was given a standing ovation by the home crowd.

Meanwhile, the Test match between England and New Zealand ended in a draw. England scored 199 in the first innings courtesy of Ramprakash, who remained unbeaten on 69. In reply, New Zealand declared their innings at 496. England were at 181 for two in the third innings when the match was called off due to rain. and bad lighting.
