It was not a perfect start as Shane Warne finished with figures of 1/150, his only wicket being Man of the Match Ravi Shastri.

Perhaps the greatest spinner of all time, Australia’s Shane Warne made his debut on this day 26 years ago against India in Sydney in 1992. It was not a perfect start as he finished with figures of 1/150, his only wicket being Man of the Match Ravi Shastri. The right-handed batsman was caught by Dean Jones for 206 runs. It was a high-scoring affair and the match ended in a draw.

Warne did no better in the fourth Test at the Adelaide Oval, where he finished with figures of 0/78. He finished the series with figures of 1/228 and it ruled him out for the fifth Test.

After being dropped, Warne went back to the drawing board, worked on his action and honed his skills. All these efforts paid dividends as he established himself as the best spinner to play the game.

He played a total of 145 Test matches, where he took 708 wickets, the second most in the format after Sri Lankan spin wizard Muttiah Muralitharan. He took 37 five-wicket hauls in Tests, the second most after Murali’s 67 half-centuries.

Warne has also featured in 194 One Day Internationals where he has taken 293 wickets. In this format, he made his debut in March 1993 against New Zealand in Wellington.

He was also known to have a sharp tactical mind and, although he could never captain Australia consistently, he got a chance to show his leadership abilities in the Indian Premier League. In the inaugural season, he led Rajasthan Royals to victory in 2008, an unexpected side.

Warne is now a cricket broadcaster and he can be heard commenting on several matches across the world.
