Chasing 127 to win – it should have been an easy win for West Indies. But the Indian bowlers wreaked havoc and in the process tied them for 126 runs and set a record for the tie.

Two decades ago, on this day, India and the West Indies played a thrilling match in a Day-Night One Day International (ODI) match between Benson and Hedges World Series 1991–92 in Perth. Winning the toss, then West Indies captain Richie Richardson invited Mohammad Azharuddin-led Team India to bat first. Richardson’s decision to field first was also supported by his bowlers as he removed Indian opener Kris Srikkanth from the attack for an individual score of 3 runs off 8 balls.

After Srikanth’s departure, Sanjay Manjrekar came to the crease along with the flamboyant Ravi Shastri. Both tried their best to dodge the pace attack from the Windies bowlers but could not do much as Anderson Cummins removed Manjrekar from the attack to leave India 35/2. Indian batting maestro Sachin Tendulkar Came out to bat at number four and got out within six runs.

Shortly thereafter, India’s batting fell and she was dismissed for a total of 126 runs in 47.4 overs. Shastri was the batsman’s choice from the Indian side.

He scored 33 runs in 110 balls. Apart from Shastri, only three other players – Praveen Amre (20 off 50 balls), Sanjay Manjrekar (15 off 39 balls) and Manoj Prabhakar (13 off 22 balls) – managed to score runs in double digits. What makes India’s performance even more suspicious is the fact that three players were removed from the crease through runouts.

Curtly Ambrose was the bowler for West Indies. He won the player of the match title by taking two wickets for nine runs in 8.4 overs.

Chasing 127 to win – it should have been an easy win for West Indies. But that didn’t happen as the Indian bowlers wreaked havoc on their opposition and in the process bundled them out for 126 runs to create a tie record.

Subroto Banerjee acted with the ball for India, taking three for 30. Kapil Dev and Javagal Srinath took two wickets each, while Manoj Prabhakar and Sachin Tendulkar took one wicket each.
