On this day in 1986: Javed Miandad wins India’s heart with a six off Chetan Sharma in the last ball and Sharjah wins the final

Exactly 36 years have passed since Javed Miandad hit Chetan Sharma for a last-ball six to help Pakistan win the Australia-Asia Cup final in Sharjah. Batting first, India scored 245 runs on the scoreboard, thanks to brilliant performances from Kris Srikkanth (75 off 80), Sunil Gavaskar (92 off 134) and Dilip Vengsarkar (50 off 64).

For Pakistan, Wasim Akram took three wickets, while captain Imran Khan took two. After India set a target of 246 runs, Pakistan got off to a slow start and lost three wickets for 61 runs. Coming at No. 4, Javed Miandad led Pakistan’s innings and scored a scintillating century.

Pakistan needed four runs off the last ball to win the match. Miandad smashed Sharma for a historic victory and helped his team win the Asia Cup title. Miandad has also mentioned six in his autobiography ‘Cutting Edge: My Autobiography’.

He wrote, ‘I knew he would try to bowl a yorker, so I decided to stand right in front of the crease… Poor Chetan Sharma.
