On this day in 1983: Journey to Glory begins with India defeating West Indies in World Cup group clash

The 1983 World Cup is an important moment in India’s cricket history as it revolutionized the game in the country, thanks to which Kapil Dev’s men brought home silverware for the first time in its history. It is no secret that India were lagging behind in the competition and had little expectations from them.

However, in their opening match itself, India managed to stun the cricket fraternity as they declared their claim in style.

Playing their first match of the 1983 World Cup, India made an inspiring start and defeated two-time defending champions West Indies by 34 runs. West Indies captain Clive Lloyd won the toss and invited India to bat first and started the much awaited match.

The West Indies bowlers largely dominated the competition as they kept the opposition under control by restricting the flow of runs and taking timely wickets.

However, a brilliant innings from Yashpal Sharma turned things around for India. Under pressure, Yashpal scored a brilliant 89 with the help of nine fours. Thus, India managed to score a total of 262 runs on the scoreboard for the loss of eight wickets.

Chasing 263, West Indies got off to a good start as Sir Gordon Greenidge and Desmond Haynes shared a 49-run stand. However, seamer Roger Binny and spinner Ravi Shastri went through the Caribbean batting order.

Binny and Shastri both took three wickets each. He was heavily supported by Balwinder Sandhu and Madan Lal, who claimed a skull each.

No batsman from the West Indies team could even score 40 runs with Joel Garner and Andy Roberts making 37-37 as the joint highest run-getter for the Indies.

With a massive 66-run win over West Indies, the two teams will clash again. However, as it turned out, the two teams also met in a summit clash with India’s script history by becoming champions.
