Punjab Minister Rana Gurjit Singh‘s son Rana Inder Partap Singh filed his nomination papers as an independent candidate from Sultanpur Lodhi, after holding a show of strength of his supporters on Tuesday.
He said he had come to the constituency to save Congress as the sitting MLA and party’s official candidate Navtej Singh Cheema was set to lose “due to strong resentment among people against him”. “If I do not contest, the seat would go to some other party. I remain a loyal Congressman and my victory will be that of the Congress party only. I don’t know what compulsions the party may have had in fielding someone who is sure to lose, so I decided that to win the seat for it (party),” he said. “The huge response I am getting from people makes it clear who is going to win,” he added.
“My seat will go straight away into the Congress party’s kitty, when every seat counts,” he said.
Later, Rana Gurjit addressed a large crowd of supporters in Sultanpur Lodhi in his support, saying: “Reign of oppression in the constituency would be over.” He even specifically named a police official saying that he was posted here for “extorting” money from people.
In Khadoor Sahib, a piquant situation arose on the last day of filing of nomination papers after Harpinder Singh Rajan Gill and Updesh Singh Gill, brother and son of Congress’s Khadoor Sahib MP Jasbir Singh Gill alias Dimpa, filed nomination papers as Congress party’s candidate from Khadoor Sahib assembly constituency from where sitting MLA Ramanjit Singh Sikki has already filed his nomination papers as Congress party’s candidate.
Sikki had filed his nomination papers as a Congress candidate on January 29 and had been campaigning in the constituency since then. The party had officially declared Sikki as its candidate which irked Dimpa, who wanted the party to give the ticket to Rajan Gill. Sources informed that earlier it was decided to field Rajan as an independent candidate from Khadoor Sahib. Sikki had filed two nomination papers each as a Congress candidate and an independent candidate.
Sources further informed that anyone could file the nomination papers and if there was any shortcoming, the papers could be rejected during scrutiny which will take place on Wednesday. However, the same has given some time to Congress’s high command to rethink its decision.
