On Hindi Divas, here is a list of revolutionary Hindi poets who changed the world with their words

India is the land of culture, art and philosophy. Poets in India too have a long history of facing social and political oppression by those in power and bringing about change at the grassroots level.

Even in the present day, poets from the Indian subcontinent have spoken for their ideas and written for peace, change, rights and revolution. Some of these poets became mythical because they practiced what they had taught. Here is a list of some contemporary Hindi poets who fall under this group-

Nepali Sharan Gupt

National poet and Padma Bhushan awardee Maithili Sharan Gupta, was one of the contemporary Hindi poets of India. A major admirer of Kabirdas, Gupt started writing poems shortly after leaving school. His literary style was distinct as he wrote in Khari Boli (simple dialect), although most others chose to use the Braj Bhasha dialect. His writings were predominantly nationalistic in nature, with stories inspired by the Ramayana, Mahabharata, Buddhist tales and the lives of holy people.

Bharat-Bharati, in which he wrote about the liberation struggle, was his majorly acclaimed work. Other famous works of Gupta are Saket, Jayadratha Vadh, Kirano’s Khel and Yashodhara.

Ramdhari Singh ‘Dinkar’

He was a rebel at heart, and enthusiastically supported the youth burning with vengeance against the British. His ideas, giving voice to the more revolutionary forces of the freedom struggle, were powerful and influential. He was awarded the moniker Rashtrakavi for his patriotic works (National Poet). Being a poet in the Veer Rasa (courage) vein. As a leader, poet and Member of Parliament, he participated in the liberation movement.

The four chapters of Sanskrit is one of his most famous works. Rashmirathi, another of his works, is considered one of the greatest translations of the Mahabharata.

Harivanshrai Bachchan

He is one of the most influential, inspiring and multi-talented poets of India! He wrote in Hindi and English on various subjects. He was the torch bearer of Chhayavad. Poetry was not only a way for him to express himself, but it was also an opportunity for him to understand the changing circumstances around him.

One of his earlier articles, Agneepath, discusses the importance of struggle and having a purpose in life. Some of his compositions are Dhar ke hir udhar, lo din son, lo night gone.

Sarojini Naidu

Sarojini Naidu, popularly known as the ‘Nightingale of India’, was a freedom fighter, poet, advocate of women’s rights and an opponent of imperialism. She was a unique woman of her kind. His poetry was completely nationalistic, depicting India and the richness of Indian culture in detail. His poetry was rich in imagery and lyricism. She was also a part of the suffrage movement while in Cambridge.

Naidu’s poetry includes children’s poems and more serious poems about patriotism, passion and sorrow. One of his most popular poems is “In the Markets of Hyderabad”, published in 1912. His poem ‘The Gift of India’ has also been widely appreciated.

Mahadevi Verma

Mahadevi Verma is a well-known name in the history of Hindi literature. Any discussion of Hindi literature is incomplete without them. She was known for writing about her personal life and speaking about social welfare and development of women. Mahadevi was considered as ‘Saraswati’ in the great temple of Hindi literature. He was also awarded the Padma Bhushan in 1988. Mahadevi Varma will be remembered as one of the most celebrated story writers in Hindi literature.

Yama, My Family, Path Ke Saathi, and his famous childhood memoir, My Childhood Days are among his important writings. The story of Gillu, a little squirrel, is one of his touching stories.

Ram Prasad Bismil

Ram Prasad Bismil was born in 1897 in Shahjahanpur, Uttar Pradesh and was fluent in both Hindi and Urdu. He wrote under the pen name ‘Bismil’. Apart from being a poet, he was also a revolutionary and freedom fighter. People remember his poetry Sarfaroshi ki Tamanna by heart. His poems and poems to which he devoted his life reflect the same passion for the land. His poetry depicts the restlessness and anxiety of adolescence.

Some of Bismil’s most significant works include Tarana-e-Bismil, Gulami Mita Do, Charcha Apne Qatl Ka.
