Omron variants detected in 5 Indian states so far, tally reaches 21 – Key Features

The new COVID-19 variant, ‘Omicron’ has created panic across the world. In India too, the cases of omicron are increasing continuously. India’s Omron tally reached 21 on Sunday after nine new cases were reported in Rajasthan’s Jaipur. The rising number of Omicron cases has created concern for the public as well as the government.

As the number of cases rose on Monday, let’s see what we know about the new COVID version so far.

The World Health Organization (WHO) declared Omicron a ‘form of concern’.

India on Sunday reported 17 more cases of the Omicron variant, taking the number to 21 in the country.

Nine in Rajasthan’s capital Jaipur, seven in Maharashtra’s Pune district and one person who reached Delhi from Tanzania on Sunday were fully vaccinated.

Most of those who tested positive had either recently come from African countries or were in contact with people who had come from African countries.

– The first patient to test positive for Omicron in Delhi is a 37-year-old man from Ranchi, who had traveled from Tanzania to Doha and from there to Delhi.

The government has intensified precautionary measures at all international airports.

– President Joe Biden’s chief medical adviser, Dr. Anthony Fauci, told CNN’s “State of the Union” on December 5 that scientists needed more information before drawing conclusions about Omicron’s seriousness, PTI reported.

Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya has reviewed the RT-PCR testing facilities for passengers coming from at-risk countries at IGI Airport, New Delhi.

– According to clinical observations, the omicron version of COVID-19 may be more transmissible and have a higher risk of re-infection than delta and beta variants of the virus, Singapore’s health ministry said.
