Omicron Covid variant cases detected in India, government says no need to panic: Key points

New Delhi: The Union Health Ministry said Two Kovid-19 cases of Omicron variant Was found in India and asked people not to panic. Both the cases have been reported in two patients aged 66 and 46 in Karnataka, Joint Secretary, Union Health Ministry, Lav Agarwal said in a press briefing on Thursday.

The Omicron variant, which was first discovered in South Africa and classified as a ‘Version of Concern’ by the WHO, has caused panic across the world. Several countries have banned travel from southern Africa and imposed other restrictions, among reports Omicron can also spread to people who have been vaccinated,

The variation is a cause for concern due to the high number of mutations in the spike protein, which facilitates virus entry into the human cell.

Here’s what the health ministry said on the Omron COVID edition:

1) Two patients infected with the Omicron variant of Kovid-19 have mild symptoms. “No serious symptoms have been observed so far in all such cases in the country and across the world,” Lav Agarwal said.

2) All primary and secondary contacts of both the patients have been timely traced and are being tested.

3) The Health Ministry said that so far 373 cases of Omicron type have been detected in 29 countries. “It is too early to assess whether Omicron causes more or less severe infections than variants including Delta,” the official said.

4) The government urged everyone to follow the COVID-appropriate behavior and get fully vaccinated without delay. VK Paul, Member-Health, NITI Aayog said, “We need not panic about omicron detection, but awareness is extremely important. Follow COVID-appropriate behavior and avoid gatherings.”

5) The South-East Asian region, including India, reported only 3.1 percent of the world’s COVID-19 cases in the past week, the Health Ministry said.
