Subhash Sarkar said he does not agree with those who allege that attempts are being made to ‘saffronize education’.

Old Macaulay system of education was “evil” as students had to “read, write and vomit”, says central MoS Education Subhash Sarkar said on Saturday.

Talking to reporters at Raj Bhavan, he said that the New Education Policy (NEP) will help students to get holistic education.

“The previous Macaulay system of education was wicked. The students had to read, write, and then vomit. The whole world is moving from the old education policy to a new holistic way of education which is imparted in such a way that the students can give back to the society,” he said.

British statesman Thomas Babington Macaulay was instrumental in introducing English as the medium of instruction for India in the 1800s.

“Now, we need holistic education, and there should be no compartments. A student of arts can study physics and chemistry, while a student of science can include history and economics as subjects of their choice .

He was part of a panel discussion on NEP at Raj Bhavan organized by the Traders’ Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Governor CV Anand Bose and several eminent educationists were also present.

The government said it does not agree with those who allege that attempts are being made to ‘saffronize education’.

“Please show me an example of saffronisation. Is it saffronisation if I say that India gave ‘Zero’ to the world, or if I mention that ‘Pi’ was discovered by Indian sages.

He said that the West Bengal government is only verbally saying that it will not implement NEP and has not given anything in writing.

The minister said that if any state does not follow the NEP, it will be a big loss for the students as there will be a common university entrance exam in the country.
