Oil PSUs to set up 22,000 EV charging stations – Times of India

New Delhi: Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) and two other public sector oil companies are working to reduce carbon intensity and support the country’s goal of reaching net zero emissions by 2070 by 22,000 electric vehicles (EVs) over the next 3-5 years. EV) charging stations. .
Country’s largest state-controlled refiner by capacity to set up IOC EV Charging facilities at 10,000 fuel outlets in the next three years, said chairman Shrikant Madhav Vaidya.
Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) said it will set up 7,000 stations over the next five years while Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) plans to have 5,000 stations.
At the 2021 Climate Change Conference, also known as COP26, Prime Minister Narendra Modi outlined a net-zero emissions target for India by 2070. Also, India is targeting to increase its low-carbon electricity capacity to 500 gigawatts (GW) by 2030 and meet 50 percent of its total energy needs by 2030.
It wants to reduce the carbon intensity of its economy by 45 percent, cut projected carbon emissions by 1 billion tonnes by 2030, and achieve a net-zero target by 2070.
Oil Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said on Tuesday that IOC plans to set up 2,000 charging stations next year, with BPCL and HPCL targeting 1,000 in the same period.
Billionaire Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Industries’ mobility joint venture with BP last month also launched its first mobility retail outlet in Maharashtra, which will offer EV charging and battery swapping.
It also finalized an agreement with all-electric ride-hailing service BlueSmart to set up EV charging infrastructure in India.
In a statement, BPCL said that by building a robust electric vehicle charging infrastructure, the company will open up a new business opportunity as well as hedge against the risk of displacement of auto fuels.
BPCL Chairman Arun Kumar Singh said, “We are aiming to reach the number of 7,000 stations to support the growing EV industry and these stations will be known as ‘Energy Stations’.”
“EV charging infrastructure is one of the five focus areas that BPCL is working on along with petchem, gas, consumer retailing, renewables and biofuels that will meet the energy needs of the country.”
While IOC sees that fossil fuels such as petrol and diesel will continue to play a major role in meeting India’s energy needs over the next few decades, the company encourages automobile manufacturers to ramp up EV production and build infrastructure to give customers confidence for one. is installing. Uninterrupted drive, Vaidya said.
“The country’s energy pie is growing. We are not a stagnant economy. Overall our energy pie is growing and therefore all types of fuel will be needed to meet the energy needs,” he said.
IOC plans to install 50 kW EV Charging Station To weave a network on every 25-km and 100-kW heavy-duty chargers every 100-km that will give customers easy access to their charging electric vehiclesHe said that charging stations would be set up at existing and new petrol pumps across the country.
“At all our refineries, we are taking steps to make them zero from a production point of view. We will make an announcement soon,” he said.
He said India’s net-zero target will not affect his firm’s refining expansion plans as India’s per capita energy consumption is one-third of the global average, leaving room for all forms of energy use, including fossil fuels.
“In line with PM @narendramodi ji’s Panchamrut announced in Glasgow to reduce the carbon intensity of the economy by 45% by 2030, India’s oil companies will set up 22,000 EV charging stations on a mission mode in major cities and national highways across the country. ,” Puri tweeted.
Of these, the IOC will set up 10,000 stations. “It has already installed 439 EV charging stations and is planning to install 2000 charging stations across its retail outlet network in the next one year,” he added.
“Another 1000 EV charging stations will be installed by @BPCLlimited within next one year and 7000 in total. It has already installed 52 stations. @HPCL which has installed 382 EV stations so far, 1000 stations in next one year and in total 5000.”
