Odisha Sports Minister TK Behera said the state is creating international-class sports infrastructure and successfully hosting global events

Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Friday said his government will promote chess in schools and colleges. Handing over the Chess Olympiad relay torch to Padmini Raut at a function held at Lok Seva Bhawan, he said that it is a proud moment for us. India Because it was hosting such an international event in the 75th year of its independence. Kiran Manisha Mohanty brought the relay torch to Lok Seva Bhawan and handed it over to Achyuta Samant, Chief Patron of All Odisha Chess Association (AOCA). The Chief Minister received the torch from Samant.

Both Kiran and Padmini are international chess players from Odisha. Six players from the state will participate in the Olympiad to be held in Chennai. Patnaik said that some players from the state have performed well in national and international chess events.

“We also organized World Junior Chess Championship in 2016. We want to further strengthen the sport across the state, especially in schools,” he said. He said that chess is a game that can be taught easily as it does not require much infrastructure or equipment.

“We will regularly organize competitions at school and college level and promote sports in a professional manner,” Patnaik said. Congratulating the organizers of the Olympiad, the Chief Minister said that perhaps for the first time in India, representatives of about 200 countries would participate in a sporting event.

He said that India has produced some of the best chess players in the world and this event will give a further boost to the game. PM receives relay torch Narendra Modi in New Delhi on June 19, and he handed it over to Grand Master Viswanathan Anand. Orissa Play Minister TK Behera said that the state is creating sports infrastructure of international standard and is successfully hosting global events.
