NZW vs SLW: Athapaththu shines with bat as Sri Lanka registers historic 10 wicket-win

New Delhi: The Sri Lanka women’s cricket team created history on Wednesday, July 12 at the P. Sara Stadium in Colombo, Sri Lanka. The Chamari Athapaththu-led side defeated the White Ferns by 10 wickets to end the series 2–1.

Batting first, New Zealand scored 140 runs thanks to some crucial innings from Sophie Devine and Suzie Bates. In reply, Sri Lanka won by 10 wickets thanks to Chamari Athapaththu’s 80 off 47 balls.

Athapaththu shines with the bat

Chasing the target, the Sri Lankan team was given a solid start by the openers. Captain Chamari Athapaththu batted fearlessly and achieved the target in just 14.3 overs. Athapaththu and his partner Harshita Samarawickrama shared a 143-run partnership. Samarawickrama scored 49 off 40 balls while Chamari Athapaththu scored 80 off 47 balls.

However, Sri Lanka lost the 3-match T20I series, winning the last match after losing the first two matches.

Highest partnership for Sri Lanka in T20i

Chamari Athapaththu and Harshita Samarawickrama set the record for the highest partnership for Sri Lanka in T20s. Both scored 143 runs against New Zealand. Earlier, the record for the biggest partnership for Sri Lanka was in the name of Harshita Samarawickrama and Neelakshi de Silva, who shared a 104-run partnership against Bangladesh on 12 February 2023.
