NZ vs BAN, 2nd Test: End of story as Ross Taylor takes New Zealand to victory over Bangladesh

New Zealand wrapped up the second Test against Bangladesh by an innings and 117 runs, with Ross Taylor taking the final wicket to complete the two-Test series in Christchurch on Tuesday.

Liton Das scored 102 off 111 balls for Bangladesh but it was nowhere near enough as the tourists were forced to trail 385 runs after being bowled out for 278 in their second innings.

The top order put up stiff resistance to post 123 for three, while Liton put on a century partnership for the sixth wicket with Nurul Hasan.

But there was no fighting in the tail as world Test champions, New Zealand, completed a much-needed victory after a massive eight-wicket loss in the first Test.

Playing his 112th and final Test, the 37-year-old New Zealand stalwart Taylor had a rare bowl at the end and took the final wicket with Abadot Hossain for four by Tom Latham.

It was a fitting farewell for Taylor, who exited red-ball cricket with New Zealand’s record 7,683 runs to finish 37th on the all-time list of the game’s highest run-getters.

Bangladesh were drowned in their second innings by the bounce of Neil Wagner, who took three for 77, while Kyle Jamieson took four for 82.

But the foundation of victory was laid by captain Latham by scoring 252 runs and New Zealand’s first innings was bundled out for 521 for six.

Bangladesh bowlers failed to capitalize on the green wicket after winning the toss and calling New Zealand to bat and when Bangladesh batted New Zealand pace duo Trent Boult and Tim Southee showed how to use the conditions.

With swing and seam, the innings was completed in 41.2 overs for 126, with Boult taking five for 43 and Southee taking three for 28.

When Bangladesh were sent to bat again, New Zealand produced short-ball specialist Wagner, the third weapon in their bowling arsenal.

After Jamieson removed Shadman Islam (21), Wagner entered the action with a short delivery to Najmul Hossain Shanto (29), which was bolted to the fine leg boundary.

Debutant Mohammad Naeem scored 24 off 98 balls before falling to Southee and then Wagner was back in action.

Captain Mominul Haque had reached 37 when Wagner switched on a full delivery, which Taylor got at first slip.

Yasir Ali, who scored 55 in the first innings, was on two runs when he stopped on a rising delivery from Wagner and the ball hit Latham at second slip.

Jamieson, who struggled with his line in the lost Test won by Bangladesh by eight wickets, was very quick in Christchurch, removing Mehdi Hasan and Liton and went with the wicket of Shadman.
