Nupur Sharma Comment row: HC directs WB govt to call in central forces if…

Kolkata: The Calcutta High Court directed the state authorities to call in the central forces if the local police fail to control the situation at any place. The court hoped that the West Bengal government would take necessary steps to ensure that no untoward incident takes place in protest against the controversial remarks made by suspended BJP spokespersons. A division bench headed by Chief Justice Prakash Srivastava on Monday directed the state government, “If the state police is unable to control the situation at any place, the state authorities shall take immediate steps to call in the central forces.” It directed the filing of a status report on the situation on June 15 on the request of the Advocate General representing the State to do so.

The petition was filed before the High Court seeking deployment of Army in the wake of violent protests in Howrah, Murshidabad and Nadia districts against controversial remarks on Prophet Mohammad by sacked BJP spokesperson and expelled leader Naveen Jindal. One of the five petitioners prayed before the division bench for a probe by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) into the protests, which claimed that arson and vandalism of public and private properties was affecting national integrity.

The petitioners claimed that the National Highway 16 at Ankurhati in Howrah district was blocked for several hours on June 9, alleging that there was a complete failure on the part of the state police to respond to the situation.

Alleging that houses and shops were vandalized by an unruly mob, one of the petitioners listed the names of those whose establishments or vehicles were damaged, apart from the BJP party office at Raghudevpur in Howrah district.

A division bench of Justice R Bhardwaj directed that the matter be taken up for hearing again on June 15. Advocate General SN Mukherjee, opposing the prayers, claimed that apart from one incident of damage to a passenger train at Bethuadahri in Nadia, there is no violent protest reported in the state in nearly 36 hours. He also submitted before the bench that 214 people have been arrested and prohibitory orders have been imposed in the affected places besides temporarily suspending internet services.

Nupur Sharma has been summoned to Narkeldanga police station on June 20.

Kolkata Police has summoned suspended BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma to appear before Narkeldanga police station on June 20 to record her statement in connection with her controversial remarks on Prophet Mohammad. Sharma’s remarks made during a TV debate have triggered violent protests in many parts of the country, including West Bengal, where the Howrah district, parts of Murshidabad and South 24 Parganas were reportedly held since last Friday prayers. There have been violent protests.

Trinamool Congress minority cell general secretary Abul Sohail has also lodged an FIR against Sharma at the Contai police station over his remarks. Responding to the Kolkata Police summons sent to the former BJP leader, CPI(M) leader Sujan Chakraborty said, “Nupur Sharma should have arrested Delhi long back. His comments have put the nation to shame. Now, in Bengal. Instead of pressurizing the Center to arrest him, the TMC government is trying to gain political mileage by doing so.”

PTI quoted Congress’s Kamaruzzaman Chowdhury as saying, “His comments had hurt lakhs of people. The FIR should have been lodged long back so that Sharma could be arrested. Now, when the situation has started getting out of hand, FIR has been lodged.” Its being done.” as saying.

BJP’s chief whip in Bengal legislature Manoj Tigga told PTI, “Nupur should consult a lawyer… why can’t the state take action so that common people can get back to their normal lives?”
