Indian Army has proposed to procure two new regiments of Akash Prime Missile Air Defense Missile System equipped with indigenous technology for better accuracy. In this way, the Indian Army will get a major Make in India solution to enhance its capabilities to shoot down enemy aircraft and drones.

Sources said the proposal is at an advanced stage before the government. This proposal will help to further strengthen the country’s air defense against air strikes from both China and Pakistan.

Earlier, the Western and South-Western Commands of the Army had conducted about a dozen tests of the current version of the Akash missile. All had excellent results, while these missiles were also deployed in an operational role during recent conflicts.

Prime is equipped with Active Radio Frequency Seeker
Akash Prime is equipped with an indigenous Active Radio Frequency (RF) seeker, which provides better accuracy, as compared to the current version of this missile. Apart from this, it performs better in low temperatures in high altitude areas.

Strong even at an altitude of 4500 meters

The missile can be deployed at an altitude of up to 4500 meters and can hit targets at a range of about 25-30 km.

An existing ground system of Akash weapon system has also been used with some modifications. This missile can be deployed up to an altitude of 4500 meters and it can destroy targets up to a distance of 25 to 35 km.

Both the regiments of Akash Prime missiles are expected to be deployed in areas of altitude above 15,000 feet. The new Akash missiles have an improved performance range, capable of protecting against any intrusion of aircraft through mountainous borders with Pakistan and China.

The development comes at a time when the Western and South Western Commands of the Indian Army conducted nearly a dozen test firings of the existing version of the Akash missiles in the force. Sources said the results were found to be good despite the fact that the missiles used for test firing were deployed in an operational role during the recent conflicts.
