The Modi government on Wednesday approved setting up of 7 new battalions, 1 operational base with 9,400 personnel for the Indo-China LAC security force Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), officials said.
The proposal was approved after a cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
As per the government’s approval, the new manpower will be used to man 47 new border outposts and a dozen ‘staging camps’ or troops’ bases along this border. The armies of India and China are engaged in a standoff in Ladakh since 2020.
The nearly 90,000 strong ITBP personnel was raised after the Chinese aggression of 1962 and is tasked with guarding the 3,488 km long Line of Actual Control (LAC) on the eastern side of India.
