Ricky Ponting indicated that Delhi Capitals would not include Shaw in the playing XI for the next few matches and would try other players.

Delhi Capitals head coach Ricky Ponting opened up on Prithvi Shaw’s poor form in the current season of the Indian Premier League. Shaw has been very disappointing this season for the Capitals and has scored just 47 runs in 6 matches at an average of 7.83. The talented opener has not been able to register a half-century in his last 13 innings of IPL (including last season). With his current position in the points table, the Capitals had to take the difficult decision of dropping him from the XI for their last match against Sunrisers Hyderabad.

Ahead of the home clash against SRH, Ponting indicated that the Capitals would not include Shaw in the XI for the next few matches and would try other players.

“I think it is 13 games (keeping in mind IPL 2022 as well) as Prithvi has scored 50 runs with the bat for Delhi Capitals. There are many other players in the top order with other teams who are playing much better than Prithvi, Ponting said ahead of the team’s match against Sunrisers Hyderabad on Saturday.

Interestingly, on the eve of the SRH clash, Shaw was not seen batting in the main nets for the batting session but he was part of some fielding drills.

“Prithvi at his best… We know he is a match-winner. “It’s one of the reasons why he is such a consistent player because we know that if he bats a certain amount of time, we win about 95% of the matches,” Ponting said. Ponting continued.

The legendary Australian skipper suggested that dropping a promising star like Shaw was not an easy call but he does not want an out-of-form player at the opening spot.

He said, ‘I think in the six matches he played, he had more than 40 runs, so we don’t need him right now. So is it a tough decision to drop him but hopefully the team we put out on the park tomorrow can win another game for us,” said the head coach.

Meanwhile, Ponting said that Shaw worked hard on his fitness at the NCA and had high hopes from him this season but it did not go according to plan.

“When he came this year, he’s been working really hard on his fitness for a few weeks at the NCA, he turned up in good physical shape and his work ethic and training and everything in the nets suggested to me that Maybe just such a big year for him but it hasn’t worked yet.”

While he also added that if the new combination doesn’t work out, Shaw might get a chance in the later stages of the tournament.

Ponting said, ‘But having said that there is a long way to go and if things don’t work out with our current top order, there is no reason why he can’t come back in the team and hopefully start the tournament really well. I can finish strongly. ,
