Bollywood veteran characters are making inroads in the world of insects. Researchers from Gadag have named two of the bugs after the famous characters of Mogambo and Ramu Kaka, played by actors Amrish Puri and AK Hangal on screen. This new nomenclature system is in vogue and students as well as researchers have welcomed the initiative.

Apeflypupa 2 is named ‘Mogambo’ after the iconic role played by Puri in the 1987 film ‘Mr India’, Halyomorpha halisa is named ‘Ramu Kaka’, a role played by Hangal in several films .

The researchers said the move had a dual purpose. One, to pay tribute to celebrities and second, to generate interest among research students by making the study of insects easier for identification.

Researchers Sangamesh Kadagad and Manjunath Nayak said, “We are naming the bugs to help junior researchers identify them easily. We first give them scientific names and then choose the names of legends. Now, students can easily identify the specimens.” We have also named some bugs after famous politicians and cricketers based on their appearance and size, but they are yet to be finalised.

The practice of naming insects after popular figures began recently when a catacanthus incarnate was named ‘Hitler’ because of its resemblance to the German dictator’s face. Similarly, the ‘Mogambo’ bug resembles Puri’s character in ‘Mr India’.

Last week, a new species of wasps was named ‘Soligus’, an indigenous community of Biligiri Rangan Hills (BR Hills) in Karnataka’s Chamarajanagar district, in recognition of their contribution to the conservation of forests and biodiversity.

A new spider sighted after a long time in Gadag city on Monday was named after ‘Bhallala’ of ‘Baahubali’ as its body resembles the chariot used by Bhallaladeva in the film.
