However, in a letter to Congress President Sonia Gandhi, Sidhu had said that he would continue to serve the party. He took over as the party’s state president in July this year.
According to party legislators, on Tuesday, Sidhu and Channi had formed a united front and said that they would work together and fight the elections together. They met each other during a meeting of party MLAs and other senior leaders on Tuesday evening to discuss the election strategy.
The meeting took place on a day when former Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh resigned from the Congress and announced the name of his own political party. Senior Congress leader and Punjab affairs in-charge Harish Choudhary was also present at the meeting, where the party tried to show that there were no differences between Channi and Sidhu and the party would fight the elections united.

Congress MLA Navtej Singh Cheema said Channi and Sidhu shared their experiences of contesting the elections. Cheema said that in the meeting all the party leaders decided to fight the elections unitedly.
Talking to reporters after the meeting, Choudhary said that the voters of Punjab have decided to give more seats to the Congress than in 2017. When asked whether the party was concerned about the possibility of some leaders being poached by Amarinder Singh, Choudhary declined to comment. .
