Not a college degree, but online coding helped this 23-year-old get a job at Amazon, says traditional campus hiring needs a change

Despite being from a college affiliated to Mumbai University (MU)Karan Kumar found it difficult to find a job after graduation. He claims that it was not his college degree, but that the online coding classes helped him get a job at tech-giant Amazon.

“No company comes to my college for on-campus recruitment, so I was going to be unemployed by default,” said a 23-year-old Mumbai resident who holds a degree in computer science engineering from a tier-3 college in Mumbai. Determined to get the job, Karan decided to learn to code through an online platform. He did not have a laptop and for this he used to go to cyber cafes.

Hailing from a Tier-3 engineering college, Karan claims that he was rejected from internship and job offers because he was not from a Tier-1 college or did not have a ‘branded degree’. “I applied for several jobs and internships off-campus during my engineering but never got shortlisted for the interview as students are usually rejected in the shortlisting process by companies if they Are not from Tier-1/2 colleges like IITs/NITs. So I had to work very hard on my coding skills to stand out from the crowd,” said Karan.

He took to online skilling courses to learn to code. During his college studies, he participated in as many coding programs as he could. He was ranked 12th in Google CodeJam (21’Quals) out of 60000+ participants, 72nd in Facebook Hackercup (21’Quals) out of 30000+ participants, 6-star rating on CodeChef, an internationally ranked Quora Programming Challenge 2022 Ranked 261st and ranked 17th by HackerEarth for his coding skills.

Nowadays the recruitment process is not based on traditional recruitment methods, it has changed a lot and now employers are looking for skilled candidates. It is important for universities to incorporate skill- and competency-based curricula into their programs to better prepare graduates for the challenges faced by the corporate world.

Based on his performance he got a referral from HackerEarth to apply for the job. He used this referral to apply for a job at Amazon, which he found out about through LinkedIn. After a two month long process of four coding rounds and one interview round, he got his current job.

Claiming to be a first-time software engineer from his suburb, Karan said that getting a job at Amazon was beyond his dreams and upon learning of his selection, he burst into tears.

“I think it is important for educational institutions to keep in mind the latest recruitment processes and prepare students in a similar fashion. Karan’s journey did not stop at his success. He is now helping to lift others out of poverty. They have selected a group of 20 students from disadvantaged backgrounds and are helping them learn coding and other skills to land jobs off campus.

“I teach them coding and DSA online on a weekly basis through zoom calls or google meet. If a student’s interview is near, I also take regular sessions. I teach them for free because the aim is to help them get good jobs and impart the knowledge I have acquired during my journey.”
