The report said that the estimated number of cancer cases in the Northeast in 2020 was 50,317, of which 27,503 were male and 22,814 were female.
Esophageal cancer was the most prevalent in the region with 5,785 cases last year, it said. The report predicts that esophageal cancer will continue to be most prevalent in the Northeast until at least 2025.
According to the report, breast and lung cancer is the next most common type of cancer in the Northeast.
Last year, the region had 3,674 breast cancer cases and 3,413 lung cancer cases.
The ICMR-NCDIR study further revealed that Papum Pare recorded the fastest Age Adjusted Incidence Rate (AAR) for cancers of stomach (men), liver (both gender), cervix, ovary and thyroid.
In the Northeast, cancer of the esophagus (13.6%) is most common in men, followed by lung cancer (10.9%) and colon cancer (8.7%).
The report said that among women, the breast is the major cancer site (14.5%), followed by the cervix (12.2%) and the gallbladder (7.1%). PTI
