Northeast Delhi Violence: Court frames charges against 6 accused of rioting, arson

A Delhi court has framed charges against six persons for vandalism and arson in Khajuri Khas and Bhajanpura areas during the Northeast Delhi violence on February 24, 2020.

Karkardooma District Court Additional Sessions Judge Virendra Bhatt booked Sarfaraz, Firoz, Ikram, Mustakim, Gulfam alias Zubair and Saddam alias Iqrar for rioting, unlawful assembly, arson, injuring public and police personnel and other sections. Charges framed.

On the other hand, the court has acquitted the four accused Gulfam, Javed, Anas and Shoaib Alam of all charges.

“There is insufficient material on record to frame the charges against these four accused and they are liable to be discharged,” the court said.

The FIR was registered on the statement of Head Constable Anil Kumar, who along with other employees was on duty that day to control riots and maintain law and order in Khajuri Khas and Bhajanpura areas.

The Special Public Prosecutor (SPP) submitted that three accused namely Mustaqeem, Sarfaraz and Ikram were arrested from the spot and were later identified as rioters by several police witnesses.

The SPP further said that the remaining seven accused were also arrested and implicated in the case, as they were properly identified as rioters by the police and public witnesses. He also informed that all the accused can also be seen in the video footage of the riots which take active part in the vandalism and arson at the site of the incident.

On the other hand, the lawyers of some of the accused persons submitted that they have been falsely implicated in the case and there is no legally admissible evidence against them. The matter pertains to the violence in Northeast Delhi in February 2020. In this violence 53 people were killed and hundreds were injured.
