Nokia expands its Make in India production

The company is part of India’s PLI scheme and demand for telecom gear means it is looking to ramp up production.

Nokia is now going to start manufacturing fiber broadband equipment at its factory in Chennai. That means Nokia’s Sriperumbudur plant is now making fiber broadband gear, too, the company announced this week.

The company has confirmed that there is a huge demand for these devices in India India and other countries and Nokia wants to use its local setup to manufacture it for India as well as export it.

“As the pace of 5G networks and new hybrid use models push operators toward increasingly distributed network architectures, service providers are turning to fiber to build and upgrade their existing networks,” said Sandy Motley, president of fixed networks at Nokia. Investing.”

All this demand has been catapulted with growth in the Fiber to the Home (FTTH) segment, which remains an untapped area for operators in India and other countries. But with the advent of 5G and enterprise technology getting a big boost, the fiber broadband category may also get a new lease of life.

The telecom equipment that Nokia plans to manufacture in the country also looks at the demands of network operators who are busy setting up their 5G base stations across the country. “India is witnessing huge demand for fiber connectivity from both fixed and mobile operators. OLT production at our Chennai plant will get a timely boost to meet this demand,” said Sanjay Malik, SVP and Head of India Market at Nokia.

Nokia said the planned production of the PON OLT in India will help expand the company’s production base and geographic reach. Nokia has shown its interest in the Indian government’s Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme and this development makes a strong case for the company’s bid to be part of the initiative.
