No Tomato In Your Mcdonald’s Meal! As Tomato Prices Hit The Roof, Veggie Going Out Of Menu

New Delhi: Amid rising tomato prices in the country, restaurant chain McDonald’s has also decided to remove the simple vegetable from its food menu.

Several social media users have shared a message board being put up by McDonald’s on its Twitter account stating that due to insufficient supply of the vegetable, the restaurant chain is forced to temporarily remove it from its menu.

“Dear Customers, We are always committed to serve you the best food with the best ingredients. Despite our best efforts, we have not been able to procure sufficient quantities of tomatoes that meet our world-class stringent quality checks. Hence at present We are forced to serve you the product without tomatoes,” read the notice put up outside the McDonald’s outlet in the national capital.

A report in IANS yesterday mentioned that tomato prices have risen from Rs 15 per kg in the first week of May to an astonishing Rs 120-150 per kg in various regions across the country.

Wholesalers say that the prices of vegetables have doubled in a week and their sales have come down by 40 per cent.

Meanwhile, online vegetable selling apps have also seen a hike in rates and Blinkit is selling tomato at Rs 150 per kg, bottle gourd at Rs 61 for 400g-600g.

The recent spurt in tomato prices has been attributed to the impact of heavy rainfall on the supply chain. Vegetable sellers and wholesalers are pointing to rains as the main reason behind the disruption in the supply of tomatoes, which has led to a significant increase in the retail prices of this important kitchen commodity.
