No guidelines on Covid booster dose, need to be decided now: Center tells HC

New Delhi: Amid the ongoing debate on the need for booster doses to further enhance the level of protection against coronavirus, the Center on Tuesday informed the High Court that at present there are no guidelines with regard to the administration of the third shot by health experts.

According to the presentation made by the government in the HC, the National Technical Advisory Group on Immunization (NTAGI) and the National Expert Group on Vaccine Administration for Covid-19 (NEGVAC) are considering scientific evidence relating to the dosing schedule of Covid-19 vaccines And thinking. as well as the need and rationale for a booster dose.

The government also reiterated that its current priority is to cover the entire eligible population with two doses of the COVID-19 vaccine.

“Current knowledge about the duration of immunity provided by COVID-19 vaccines in India is limited and will clearly be known only over time,” the Center said.

Reportedly, NTAGI and NeGVAC are also keeping a close watch on the rise in COVID cases, the Omron variant and the effectiveness of the current vaccines. A decision on vaccination for the third dose of Kovid-19 or the booster shot is likely to be taken soon.

The government’s statement comes a month after the Delhi High Court was asked to submit a detailed report on aspects related to the effectiveness and need for booster doses of coronavirus, amid increasing advocacy of third jab in several Western countries.

More than 55% of the population fully vaccinated

Meanwhile, Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya today informed that more than 55 per cent adult population of India has received both the doses of COVID vaccine in the country. 55.52 percent of the eligible population have been fully vaccinated, with 87 percent receiving their first dose of vaccine.

As per provisional reports, with the administration of 66,98,601 vaccine doses in the last 24 hours, India’s COVID-19 vaccination coverage has crossed 133.88 crores.
