The bill proposes to increase the reservations in government jobs and educational institutions from the existing 60 per cent (including 10 per cent for economically weaker sections among the upper castes) to 75 per cent

The Bihar assembly on Thursday passed the Reservation Amendment Bill to increase the quota for Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, Extremely Backward Classes and Other Backward Classes in government jobs and educational institutes from the existing 50 per cent to 65 per cent.

The amended reservation quota includes 20 per cent for SCs, 2 per cent for STs, 18 per cent for OBCs, and 25 per cent for EBCs.

The amended bill will now have to be signed off by Governor Rajendra Arlekar to become law.

Chief Minister Nitish Kumar spoke in favour of increasing reservation while presenting the results of the Bihar caste survey report in the Assembly and Council this week.

At a special meeting held on Tuesday evening, the Bihar cabinet approved a proposal to increase the reservations in government jobs and educational institutions from the existing 60 per cent to 75 per cent.

The bill in its first draft, proposed to increase the reservations in government jobs and educational institutions from the existing 60 per cent (including 10 per cent for economically weaker sections among the upper castes) to 75 per cent.

The reservation bill provisions for an 18 per cent quota for other backward classes (OBCs), 25 per cent for extremely backward classes (EBCs), 20 per cent for scheduled castes (SCs) and 2 per cent for scheduled tribes (STs).

Currently, there is 18 per cent reservation for EBCs, 12 per cent for OBCs, 16 per cent for SCs, 1 per cent for STs and 3 per cent for women from backward classes in Bihar in state jobs and educational institutions.

Ruckus at Bihar Assembly Over Nitish’s Controversial Remark

Members of the opposition BJP in Bihar assembly created a ruckus on Thursday in the House over several issues including Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav’s controversial remarks on women forcing adjournment of proceedings till 2 pm.

The opposition members banged chairs meant for reporting staff and nearly came to blows with treasury benches, officials said.
