According to a government notification, 1987 batch IAS topper Subhani was appointed chief secretary on December 30 and took charge on Saturday. Prior to his promotion he was the development commissioner of the state, and will retire in April 2024. In such a situation, his tenure at present is more than 2 years.

The General Administration Department has issued the notification. He will succeed Tripurari Sharan, who retires on December 31.

Subhani is originally from Siwan district, but has worked in many districts of Bihar apart from being District Magistrate on many important posts. He has previously served in key bureaucratic positions as the state home secretary for 10 years.

Discussions were already underway to make Subhani the next chief secretary. It was also discussed whether the officer, who is reportedly not in favor of the BJP, would be able to become the chief secretary.
