Nirmala Sitharaman, Kiren Rijiju to attend BJP Legislature Party meeting in Imphal today

new Delhi: Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and Union Law and Justice Minister Kiren Rijiju will visit Manipur’s capital Imphal on Sunday, March 20 to attend the Legislative Party meeting of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Manipur. Manipur’s caretaker Chief Minister N Biren Singh and BJP leader Vishwajit Singh along with other newly elected BJP MLAs from Manipur will also be present in the meeting. A decision on the next Chief Minister of Manipur is likely to be taken in the meeting.

“The BJP Manipur legislature party meeting is likely to be held at 3 pm on Sunday,” sources told news agency ANI.

Biren Singh and Biswajit Singh won the 2022 Manipur Assembly elections hingang and Thongju Assembly Constituency respectively. In Manipur, BJP leaders are being seen as the frontrunners for the post of Chief Minister. They left for Delhi on Saturday in separate flights to meet the party’s central leaders, news agency PTI reported. In the national capital, he is discussing government formation with the top leadership of the party.

The next Chief Minister of Manipur has not been announced yet. BJP sources told PTI that it will be known by Sunday who will become the Chief Minister of Manipur this time.

According to an ANI report, Biren Singh had said that he never contested an election “for CM or any other post”, but as a worker of his party, the BJP. He said that he has come to Delhi to meet the central leadership of the BJP.

“I never contested for CM or any other post, but as a worker of my party. The decision (on the face of the Chief Minister) will be taken by the higher officials. I have come to Delhi to meet the central leadership of BJP. Be it chief minister or no chief minister, I am the one who has worked in the interest of the party and will continue to do so.

Viswajit Singh, seen in what is to be another race for Manipur’s chief minister’s post, has also refused to comment on social media speculations about him in the race for the next chief minister of the state.

Biswajit Singh told media persons in New Delhi that he does not want to comment on reports that he is in the race to become the next chief minister of Manipur. He said the BJP is a democratic party, and the leadership will be decided by the chief minister, reported ANI.

On March 15, Biren Singh, Biswajit Singh and BJP state president A Sharda Devi went to Delhi amid reports of “collectivism” within the BJP. The leaders returned to Imphal on 17 March.

The BJP parliamentary board will decide the next chief minister of the state.

BJP got 32 out of 60 seats in Manipur assembly elections. Meanwhile, the Indian national Congress won five seats, National People’s Party (NPP) Seven seats, Naga People’s Front (NPF) won five seats and Kuki People’s Alliance won two seats. Independents won three seats.

In the 2017 assembly elections in Manipur, the BJP managed to form a government in alliance with two local parties, the National People’s Party (NPP) and the Naga People’s Front (NPF), despite having just 21 seats. Meanwhile, the Indian National Congress had won 28 seats.

In this year’s assembly elections, BJP had contested alone. While campaigning ahead of the elections, the party had promised to bring peace to Manipur, both in the valley and in the hills where tribals are occupied.
