Nirjala Ekadashi 2022: Know dates, importance and auspicious time

In India, there are many days and dates dedicated to deities or rituals. Ekadashi is one of them and also an important festival and devotees celebrate it with great dedication. This fast is observed twice in every month according to the Hindu calendar. It falls on the 11th day of both the lunar cycles. Every year there is a maximum of 23-24 Ekadashi.

However, Nirjala Ekadashi is perhaps the most important and notable among the twenty-four Ekadashis of the year. Nirjala means “without water”, thus Nirjala Ekadashi fasting is observed without water or food. Due to strict rules, this fast is called the most difficult Ekadashi fast.

Dedicated to Lord Vishnu, this fast is observed on Ekadashi Tithi of Shukla Paksha of Jyeshtha month. It mostly falls in June according to the Gregorian calendar. However, the dates change annually.

Auspicious time for Nirjala Ekadashi fast

Shubh Muhurta for the pooja will Begin on the day of Jyeshtha Shukla Ekadashi, which starts from June 10, 07:25 AM and lasts until Jyeshtha Shukla Ekadashi on June 11, at 05:45 AM.

Apart from this, there will be Ravi Yoga from 05:23 am to 03:37 am the next day. Paran timings will start on 11th June at 01:44 PM and end at 04:32 PM.

Nirjala Ekadashi is also known as Bhimseni Ekadashi as well as Pandava Ekadashi.

According to the Brahma Vaivarta Purana, Bhima had little discipline on his hunger and could not observe the Ekadashi fast. On the other hand, his brothers fast on all Ekadashi tithi. Then the sage Ved Vyas suggested to Bhima to observe only Nirjala Ekadashi fast and he would get the benefit of all Ekadashi fasts.

Since then, those who are unable to fast on other Ekadashi days observe Nirjala Ekadashi fast. And by observing this fast, they can take advantage of fasting on the next 23 Ekadashi days.

A devotee can get the blessings of pilgrimage sites by practicing this fast. Apart from this, observing this fast can also free a person from the burden of his sins.
