NHRC issues notice to Bihar government regarding cataract surgery, seeks detailed report

New Delhi: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Wednesday issued a notice to the Bihar government that a recent cataract surgery at a hospital in Muzaffarpur allegedly led to amputation of some patients, officials said.

In a statement, the NHRC said that it has taken suo motu cognizance of a media report that “six patients had to undergo eye amputations at Sri Krishna Medical College and Hospital (SKMCH) on November 22 due to cataract surgery at the Muzaffarpur Eye Hospital.” “

The rights panel said doctors may have to remove more patients’ eyes because of infection after surgery.

District Civil Surgeon, Dr Vinay Sharma said that a sample of the liquid used to clean the eyes during surgery has been sent from the operation theater for culture, adding that the OT has been sealed. However, no such incident has been reported anywhere else, the doctor said.

The panel said, “As per medical protocol, a doctor can perform up to 12 surgeries. However, in this case, the doctor did surgery on 65 patients.

The NHRC observed that performing surgeries in such a ‘reckless manner’ in violation of medical protocol is a matter of grave concern.

The panel has issued a notice to the Chief Secretary, Government of Bihar, seeking a detailed report, the statement said.

“The report is expected to inform about the number of patients who lost their eyes, the status of medical treatment provided to them and relief by the state government, including action against the responsible officials and doctors. The response will take four weeks. is expected within,” the statement further said.

According to media reports, in most cases, ‘the cornea of ​​the patients is badly damaged and there is a possibility that the infection may reach their brain’.
