State-owned hydroelectric power company NHPC has signed two agreements to develop green hydrogen technology in Leh and Kargil. As per the agreement signed for Leh district, NHPC will consider development of a pilot green hydrogen fuel cell based microgrid with hydrogen generation to meet the power requirement of NHPC Guest House at Nimmo Bazgo Power Station (Leh) within NHPC premises. , As per the MoU signed for Kargil district, the hydrogen generated in Kargil will be used in fuel cells, which are capable of running two buses in the local area for 8 hours.

NHPC will scale up hydrogen production on a commercial scale to meet the hydrogen needs of the Ladakh region in various sectors such as mobility, transportation, heating and micro-grids and a separate MoU will be signed later, the statement said. These two pilot projects will create a roadmap for the future development of green hydrogen and reduction in carbon emissions in the transportation/heating sector and attract long-term investments in the hydrogen economy, thereby creating various revenue streams and job opportunities for the youth of Ladakh. . ,
