Coimbatore: The Municipal Corporation is all set to restore these two Pond in Ajanuri Near Veerakeralam with the help of Non government organization Under Namakku name scheme
The ponds are not fit for use as they are not properly maintained. Nearby residents are using the ponds to dump garbage and release sewage water. In the absence of maintenance, the ponds are overall covered with invasive plants and trees.
A municipal official said the NGO, Environmentalist Foundation of India, will contribute 60% of the fund for the restoration work. The remaining 40% expenditure will be borne by the civic body. “The NGO has already paid us a contribution of Rs 32 lakh.”
Arun Krishnamurthy, founder of Environmentalist Foundation of India, said that work has started to remove garbage and invasive species by employing earthmovers. “Other works such as desilting, strengthening of banks and regulation of inlet and outlet channels will be done in the next few months. We are planning to complete the entire work by July-August.
He said that rain water from the surrounding areas is the main source of water for the ponds. “These reservoirs are important to enrich the groundwater level in the area. They can also help prevent flooding in the area.”
Krishnamurthy He said that he has successfully completed the restoration of six reservoirs – Kalapatti Mariamman Kovila Tank, Divisional Office Tank, Kalam Kuttai, periyakuttai, Kathirakuttai and Thottipalayam lake – in the city so far. “All of them had got enough water during the northeast monsoon.”
