News18 Ukraine on the border: a million refugees and counting, the cost of a war week

Two-year-old Katie arrived in Poland from Ukraine with her mother Natalie. His chubby cheeks, like his nose, were a bright red due to the cold winds in the border regions in Poland. However, oblivious to her circumstances, the little girl kept playing around and seemed happy to receive a packet of snacks from volunteers at the border.

Katy crossed the border with her mother, Natalie, who said, “It was hard to cross the line.” The reference is to the border crossing in Medyka, Poland where people have to wait a long time before being allowed into the Polish side.

Natalie said her eyes were fixed on the little girl, leaving behind her family, including her husband and brother. “Very soon, we’ll be together,” she said, trying to maintain optimism, even as she looked helpless in the face of the tragedy as she faced millions of others.

For some others, like Edina, the wait at the border was not very long. It took him about 40 minutes to cross the Medica border on Thursday, but had little effect when the price was equivalent to leaving his country. She said she had left her children in Poland a few days earlier and had gone back to Kyiv, because “they needed me”.

He made his way back to Poland as the situation in Kyiv worsened. Edina held a bunch of flowers by a friend in Kyiv as carefully as she held her passport. As she spoke on camera to this reporter, Edina suddenly broke down and wiped her tears, “All I want to say is stop it.”

While some are able to express their anguish in tears, others are not. This also includes children. An Israeli nurse who was volunteering at the medical camp said the children needed both “blanket and comfort”.

Since Sunday, he has seen more than 100 patients in addition to helping babies give some heat to prevent hypothermia, which he said has been seen in many. He said people are approaching the border with “bodily injuries”, which also require immediate attention.

Like her, there are other volunteers who help children cope with trauma. A young girl stood with soft toys and small teddy bears to please the children. A German volunteer was distributing sandwiches to border crossers.

Steven Schuster also said that his wife had witnessed discrimination against people of color trying to cross the border. He said he saw that he was being pushed behind the queues.

Poland has seen the maximum influx of refugees. According to UNHRC figures, around 5.5 million Ukrainians have so far fled to Poland across the border in Medyka, Budomierz and Krakowicz. Data compiled from February 24 to March 3 puts the total number of refugees at over 1 lakh.
