New Zealand all-rounder Rachin Ravindra calls Test debut in India a ‘wonderful honour’

New Zealand all-rounder Rachin Ravindra described his Test debut in India as a ‘wonderful honour’. He said it was great for his parents to see him make his debut in a country he grew up in before immigrating to New Zealand. The 22-year-old left-arm spin all-rounder made his Test debut during the two-match Test series against India.

“I thought about it a little bit. It was great for them (my parents) to see me play in the country they grew up in. For me, I’m a Kiwi and born in Wellington, so I Was just representing my country which is an amazing honour. It was quite an experience to make India debut against that side, an incredible team that is one of the best in the world,” said Ravindra on Senge Morning.

Ravindra made a significant contribution to nail-biting in the first Test at Kanpur, batting for 8.4 overs and scoring 18 for the final wicket with No. XI batsman Ejaz Patel denying India victory with their stubborn resistance.

Ravindra, however, was happy to share the dressing room with senior players like Kane Williamson, Ross Taylor and Tim Southee.

“Then to share a dressing room and an area with the people I grew up on like Kane (Williamson), Ross (Taylor) and Tim Southee. It was nice to be out there, taking everything and being able to contribute to save a game was awesome.”

Ravindra, who has featured in six T20 Internationals for New Zealand, has focused on establishing himself as a genuine all-rounder but is ready to play any role the team needs.

“To be honest, I will do whatever the team wants from me. The ultimate goal would be to become a real all-rounder. I think I am a batting all-rounder at the current stage of my career, but I will continue to develop both my bowling and my batting. In a perfect world, I would be a real all-rounder, but I would take it day in and day out and keep working hard.”

New Zealand’s next Test assignment will be a two-match series against Bangladesh, starting January 1 at the Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui.
