Coimbatore: Silence prevailed in the city New Year The festival begins the year with prayers with many residents visiting places of worship. There were no large gatherings and parties, as the state government had strictly banned it in view of the recent spike in Covid-19 cases. The celebrations were confined to homes and places of worship, where people followed the COVID protocols put in place by the health authorities.
People visited their relatives and friends to exchange greetings, while some traveled short distances to get rid of boredom.
The temples were crowded throughout the day. Special prayers were offered at Puliyakulam Vinayakar Temple. There were no major road accidents as police personnel were deployed on all roads to prevent over speeding and drunken driving. Most of the major flyovers were taken under police control after midnight to prevent unnecessary vehicular movement.
