New study shows COVID-19 linked to rapid weight loss, malnutrition

Various studies have shown that novel coronavirus Affects various organs. Medical experts have also claimed that in many cases, during the recovery phase, the infection causes weight loss in patients, especially those who are or were severely affected by it.

According to a report in The Indian Express, there is no clear analysis on this yet, but an October 2020 posthoc analysis of a cohort study showed that the disease may be linked to clinical manifestations. And, it may also be linked to weight loss and an increased risk of malnutrition.

The study by the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) suggests that weight loss and malnutrition were likely prevalent in Covid-19 patients. The study evaluated patients after clinical remission, indicating that 30 percent of patients had lost more than five percent of ideal body weight. In addition, it turned out that more than half were at risk of malnutrition.

Dr Abhishek Subhash, Consultant, Internal Medicine at Bhatia Hospital said that due to loss of smell and taste, weight loss has become a common phenomenon among many COVID-19 patients. But it may be more harmful for patients with secondary infection of mucormycosis. Patients suffering from mucormycosis infection had to undergo surgery and were placed on a higher class of anti-fungal drugs. Also, in many cases, it causes nausea, affects their appetite and causes weight loss,

The study further noted that changes in the sense of smell and taste, including fatigue and loss of appetite, have been reported as common symptoms in COVID-19 patients. Home isolation and symptoms also limited the amount of physical activity, resulting in reduced lean mass.

When researchers compared patients with or without weight gain, the study found that patients who lost weight had poorer kidney function, greater systemic inflammation and longer disease duration. Meanwhile, there is no data available on the impact of COVID-19 on nutritional status.
